Growing up in the deep south of Vermillion Paris, Louisianna, my first memories of childhood are in my grandmother’s garden. My grandmother always claimed she wasn’t much of a gardner, Yet the big round hydrangeas and the sweet smelling gardenias flourished. She and I would wake up early together and clip them to bring that fresh sweet smell in the house.
While other children would imagine themselves as firefighters, lion tamers, or teachers, I always wanted to be a florist. I would play flower shop for hours while the other boys would chase each other in games of tag. I’ve always been fascinated by color. It is my prime inspiration today. I love vivid and unexpected combinations of color, texture and shape in my designs.
I’ve spent years studying and perfecting my art. I first studied floral design at the Lousiana Castille Floral Arts in 1989. Afterwards I moved to Houston, Texas and studied interior design at the Art Institute there. when I moved to Chicago in 1992, I again studied floral design at the American Academy of Floral Arts. Later, I spent some time abroad in Paris, France, at La Parisianne where I mastered the art of European Bouquet Style. I’m also well versed in all aspects of floral design including: Modern and Contemporary Style, Silk Arrangements, and after spending time in Japan, Ikebana. I have been to 77 countries and have been blessed with the opportunity to experience floral design in many of my travels.
The opening of Fabre/Fleur (formerly Chicago Plant and Flower) has really been a dream come true for me. The popularity of my unique floral arrangements has allowed me to refocus my business away from retail merchandising to a sole concentration on flowers. The mission of Fabre/Fleur is to make beautiful flowers accessible to everyone via phone, fax and internet. We also take appointments at our new Gold Coast location. As always we will be providing everyday and occasional flowers. In addition, we are now expanding our services in creating one of a kind florals for weddings and other special events.
